GenCon Day 1 Monster Fight Club terrain
Just finished the first day. I arrived on Wednesday so actually got a bunch of gaming in last night. I am going to talk about a few things, but wanted to start off with something a little in depth. I backed the Kickstarter for Monster Terrain from Monster Fight Club. They were at GenCon and I was able to see the terrain in person. This is all pre painted plastic scenic pieces suitable for 28mm-ish games (you can do heroic 30 or 35mm and it should look fine as well).
Normal flocked trees are great, but I don’t necessarily care for the flock trail left behind on the board, especially with board games or RPGs. The trees have foliage so you can use them as bear trees as well as in full bloom. You could also use the tree canopy without the trunk as tall bushes.
The rocks and hills are perfect for some nice scatter terrain and there are many choices for colors on both. If you want some scenic that you can toss in a box and not worry about, I highly recommend these.
I did not get to play in a demo at all, but the new Marvel Superhero’s game from Fantasy Flight was on display. They had multiple, beautifully detailed tables set up. From the few minutes I watched, it plays a lot like Star Wars Legion, but instead of units, you have some super amped up heroes. The selection on display seemed to hit a lot of the currently popular (due to the Marvel movies) characters.
As you can see from the character cards, they have a lot of abilities and it looks like the game will feel like a comic book fight. It uses the same dice and movement device of Star Wars Legion. The people playing seemed to be having a great time so when this releases later this year/next year, I think you’ll see it very popular in stores with a super hero following. Could possibly supplant HeroClix in some places.
Personally I was able to get the convention released Nimue for the Hellboy game by Mantic games. It will be available online shortly, but I was able to get one before they sold out about 30 minutes after the convention opened.
All in all a great first day. I’ll probably have to save comments on other things I spotted or played until a future update since there is only some much room in a 500 word blog.
Quick clarification. The Marvel Crisis Protocol game is being put out by Atomic Mass Games. Fantasy Flight was just hosting them at GenCon.
