GenCon Day 3 + Poor Demo Experiences

Image
For me, GenCon Sunday is usually one last trip through the dealer hall, then an early lunch with friends before making my way to the airport. The airport was an exciting time since the fire alarms were triggered at one point and no one knew what to do. But let's get back to Day 3 and some game talk first. One of the big games that everyone seemed to want to get in on was Unmatched by Restoration Games / Mondo Games . Despite several attempts, I was never able to get in on a demo for this. And, I know there were probably reasons for this, but one day when I looked early, demos were not slated to start until 1pm. I wanted to try it out since I believe it is similar in design to the old Star Wars Duel game (which I still have my copy of) that I enjoyed a lot when it came out. Alas, no demos and they were apparently sold out within 20 minutes each morning of the show. I do like the artwork and quality of the components. Once my local store gets it in, I'll probably try and g...

GenCon Day 2 with Terror Below and Beautiful Terrain

Image
VERY late in posting my updates. Apparently gaming all day until 1am precludes being a functioning human being at night. While Thursday was my shopping day and I spent WAY too much, I spent Friday playing games and checking things out. I want to do a full review of this in the future, but I was at the launch party for Terror Below by Renegade Game Studio . For those of you who remember the movie Tremors, this is loosely based on the franchise.  Players are trying to find WORM eggs to deliver for victory points and equipment. It's a lot of "take that" from other players and trying to clear away rubble that slows your progress. I picked up my copy of the Kickstarter version from the booth and it came with some upgraded wooden tokens and this sweet resin worm. I'll do a full review in the future as I can't wait to get this to the table again. Another game that I will do a full review on later is an older title, Century: Golem edition by Plan B Games . T...

GenCon Day 1 Monster Fight Club terrain

Image
Just finished the first day. I arrived on Wednesday so actually got a bunch of gaming in last night. I am going to talk about a few things, but wanted to start off with something a little in depth. I backed the Kickstarter for Monster Terrain from Monster Fight Club . They were at GenCon and I was able to see the terrain in person. This is all pre painted plastic scenic pieces suitable for 28mm-ish games (you can do heroic 30 or 35mm and it should look fine as well). Normal flocked trees are great, but I don’t necessarily care for the flock trail left behind on the board, especially with board games or RPGs. The trees have foliage so you can use them as bear trees as well as in full bloom. You could also use the tree canopy without the trunk as tall bushes. The rocks and hills are perfect for some nice scatter terrain and there are many choices for colors on both. If you want some scenic that you can toss in a box and not worry about, I highly recommend these. I did not get ...
